Let’s start by establishing some basic information about insurance.  What are the basics of car insurance and why do you need it.  There are two basic types of car insurance: liability and collision.  These two types of insurance are not the only types, but they are the ones that we will cover today.  

Liability

This type of insurance is required by law.  You have to pay for this insurance to drive a vehicle.  Make sure that you pay for this type of insurance or you may be breaking the law simply by driving your car. 

Liability covers the cost of medical bills and collision repairs for the other person involved in the accident.  If you are at fault for a collision, then liability insurance will pay out to fix that other person’s property and health.

Collision

That leaves collision insurance which will pay out to you should you get in a wreck.  This type of insurance will go to fixing your car.  Sometimes if you are driving an extremely old car, you may opt not to pay this and just use the money you would be spending on insurance to save for another car. Regardless, it can be handy to have this type of insurance for newer cars. 

Insurance Claims

An insurance claim is when you notify the insurance company of damages.  In essence you are saying, “I would like you to give me money for the damages to my car.”  When you notify the insurance company this is what “filing a claim” is.
