After an Accident will my Insurance Premiums Raise?
So you got in an accident, the question everyone is wondering is will the insurance premiums go up? The answer to that question is maybe… We know not the answer you were looking for, but nevertheless that’s the one we can provide. There are a lot of factors that go into your insurance premium costs and we are going to list out a few now.
Factors
Cost and Severity of Accident
It really does just boil down to how much it costs to fix your stuff. If you’re costing the insurance company a lot of money by filing a really expensive insurance claim, then they will want to raise your premium to recoup some of those costs. When the insurance adjuster reviews your claim, the premiums you pay are affected by how intense that crash was. If it was a minor fender bender, then you’re less likely to have your insurance premiums go up, but if it was an extremely severe car accident then it’s more likely that your premiums might go up.
Your Driving Record
There are two things that affect your premiums: history and recent claims. Insurance companies base all their prices up probability. What’s the probability that they will have to pay money out because you wrecked your car? So when your insurance prices go up it’s because you’re more likely to have a car wreck.
The thing about probabilities is that they’re adjusted based upon your actions. So if your short term history shows an upward trend in probability that you’ll get in another car wreck, then you’re more likely to see your insurance premiums rise.
Who’s at Fault?
The next question the insurance company is going to ask when factoring if they will raise your premiums is, “Who’s at fault?” If you are at fault for the accident, then you’re more likely to see your premiums rise.
How long will my Insurance Premiums be raised for?
This depends on the insurance company, but many times you can expect your insurance premiums to be raised for an average of 3 years. After those three years, many times it will start to go down gradually. One additional thing to factor in may be your “safe driver discount”. Of course after you get in a car accident that discount may go away meaning even if your insurance premiums don’t go up, you may still have to pay more.
What about Accident Forgiveness?
Some insurance policies have what they call “accident forgiveness”. That means regardless of who is at fault, your insurance premiums typically won’t go up. That word typically is the operative word because this is based upon your specific insurance policy so make sure you read the fine print.
