Collecting Information
After any collision, it can be quite jarring. We realize you might not always think clearly or really think about all the information that you need to have to file your insurance claim. That’s why we are writing this article!
Here’s the highlight taken from Allstate Insurance Company’s website.
- Full name and contact information
- Insurance company and policy number
- Driver’s license and license plate number
- Type, color and model of vehicle
- Location of accident
Today we are going to break down each of these and talk about why we need each of them.
#1 Full name and contact information
The first thing that you need to know is their full name and contact information. This is really important because you’re going to need to contact them again potentially. If you miss any of the other information or need to ask a question, you want to be able to get a hold of them again. That’s why regardless of what other information you get – this is the most important step.
#2 Insurance (Company Name and Policy Number)
Probably the easiest way to gather this information is to simply take a picture of it. The cars should have insurance cards in them with all the information such as the company name and policy number, but in case the vehicle is too damaged to get to that information, make sure you leave with all the rest of the information.
#3 Type, color and model of vehicle
You need to get their vehicle information. That means the make and model, color and any other information about the age of the vehicle you can get. The point is that when you’re done describing the vehicle anyone could locate another vehicle like it based upon your description. The insurance adjuster reviewing your claim will use this information to help him make decisions about your claim.
#4 Driver’s License and Plates
The next thing you need to get is your driver’s license and license plate numbers involved in the car crash. Again the best way that you can do this is by taking a picture. That’s why we wrote this article talking about the best ways to take photographs so that when you need to you know how to do it.

#5 Location
You will need to be able to provide a vivid description of the location of the car accident and where everything was and what it looked like. So make sure that you pay attention to the surroundings around you and the car accident. You should be able to tell someone as many details as possible about where it happened and how it happened.
Sometimes it might be hard to remember all the details later so whenever possible write all the information down so that you don’t forget when the time comes to use it again.
RULE: Don’t Discuss Fault
This is a big rule for anyone who gets in a car accident regardless of if it’s a motorcycle collision or any other type of car crash. You shouldn’t discuss fault. That’s the insurance adjuster’s job to review your insurance claim and all the information you’ve gathered in the other previous sections of this blog post. Only after he has reviewed all the facts of your case including supporting documentation like the police report and photos will he make a decision about who is liable for damages and who is at fault.
DON’T FORGET: File a Police Report
If you didn’t call the police, it’s your responsibility to file a police report. Regardless of who files the report (you or a cop), one needs to be filed. Along with filing the police report you need to do the following…
- Identify the officers on the scene
Get both the name and badge number of the officer(s) that are assisting you. You obviously don’t need to do this if you don’t call the police, but only whenever someone comes out onsite with you to help you.
- Get a copy of the police report
The Insurance Adjuster is going to want a copy of your policy report so make sure you grab one from an office or ask him how to get one for yourself.
- Take pictures
We’ve already discussed this in our post here, but the primary thing to remember is that you cannot take too many pictures. In fact, it’s impossible to take too many photos. So make sure you take photos of the crash site, cars involved, property damaged, yourself and others hurt, etc. from any and all angles possible both up close and far away.
- Gather Contact Information
Make sure you gather the names and addresses of everyone involved including passengers and others who weren’t driving.
- Talk to Witnesses and Get their Information
If there’s anyone who saw the car accident and stopped, make sure that you get their name and contact information too.
